Democratic Rep. Brian Baird of Washington state says he will not seek re-election next year.

Baird, in his sixth term, said his job as congressman has been the highest honor and greatest responsibility of his life.

In a statement Wednesday, the 53-year-old lawmaker said he expects to serve the remainder of his term in Congress. Baird serves on the House science and transportation committees. His seat was not considered in jeopardy.
