Photo of the Week

The extraordinary sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. This photo was taken on December 20th, 2009. It was 13 degrees outside and the cold air made for fantastic colors. It was pure joy to be there and experience that sunrise.

“Sunrise is the only time you get that red glow,” said two-time It’s A Snap! winner, Rich Briggs, of this week’s stunning photo.

Briggs, a serious photography hobbyist from Riverton, Utah, captured the breathtaking sunrise at Mesa Arch on his fourth trip to Utah’s Canyonlands National Park on cold December morning last year.

“I heard, or read somewhere that the best time to get the best shot of the sun in Delicate Arch is one week before or one week after the winter solstice, the sun being lower on the horizon, so I went there specifically to do that.”

Briggs says that other than the weather being a bit cold, the best time for taking photos there is winter, when the colors are more vivid.

“It was 13 degrees outside and the cold air made for fantastic colors. It was pure joy to be there and experience that sunrise.”

“It's a lot of fun to go there, I love it.”
