On Thursday evening the U.S. started an operation to drop humanitarian supplies of food and water to refugees trapped in northwest Iraq. U.S. aircraft were also in the air, ready to launch airstrikes in defense of the refugees and humanitarian resources, U.S. officials told NBC News.
