Towns and cities along the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic coast were under flood watches, warnings and advisories on Monday morning, according to Weather.com. Nearly the entire New Jersey coast, the majority of Long Island and the whole shoreline of Maine were at risk of being hit by a heavy deluge, the worst of which could inundate the coast early Tuesday as winds kick up to more than 40 mph, Weather.com said.

The mid-Atlantic region could see 2 to 4 feet of storm surge flooding, Weather.com predicted — but the worst surge is expected in Massachusetts. The National Weather Service warned that roads and basements on the Massachusetts coast will likely fill up with water, and severe beach erosion was expected. New inlets could be formed on barrier beaches and "some vulnerable homes will be damaged or destroyed," the NWS said. It warned that evacuations could be necessary.
