Sprint said Friday the iPhone 5 supply it had went so fast that "at this time, the majority of Sprint-branded retail stores are seriously constrained or sold out of iPhone 5 inventory provided to us by Apple."

A statement from the carrier came at about 4 p.m. ET Friday, the first day of iPhone sales in the United States. The other two major wireless carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, both declined to comment to NBC News about their iPhone 5 supply situation.

"We are not commenting on inventory," said Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless, in an email.

The phone went on sale at 8 a.m. in stores around the country, and pre-orders were taken starting last Friday.

Apple said earlier this week that iPhone 5 pre-orders hit 2 million within 24 hours, while AT&T declared it the fastest-selling iPhone to date.

The iPhone 5 also went on sale Friday in Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
