This city has agreed to pay $240,000 to four victims of a serial rapist who admitted assaulting at least 10 women and children after he was released following a police interview.
Brent J. Brents met police in November 2004, when he allegedly admitted molesting an 8-year-old boy. But he was permitted to leave while an arrest warrant sat at the district attorney’s office for more than a month, awaiting an Aurora detective’s signature.
Four victims threatened to sue the city for negligence and sloppy police work because most of Brents’ crimes happened after Aurora police declined to arrest him. He was sentenced in July to more than 1,300 years behind bars. Each victim will receive $60,000.
“No amount of money can ever compensate a woman for being raped but I think they’re very happy the city has taken the substantial step to try and address the financial and emotional problems they’ve had as a result of what has happened,” said Sean Gallagher, attorney for one of the victims.
Aurora City Attorney Charles Richardson said the resolution “allows the parties to continue to heal both emotionally and physically.”
“Our goal has been to treat the families fairly and with compassion,” Richardson said.
