Rip Currents Pose Threat To Weekend Beachgoers

Authorities issue a warning to beachgoers heading to the coast this weekend.

As the weather turns warmer, more beachgoers will likely consider taking a swim, but authorities issued a warning for the weekend.

While surfers look for big waves, plenty of college students will be soaking up the sun, WESH 2 News reported.

"It was great. A little chilly, but it's real nice, real nice," Robert Rist said.

"It was all right. The water's kind of cold," Robert Tanner said.

The rough surf can open channels in the ocean floor, and while the big surf didn't let swimmers out to far during the week, the water should calm over the weekend, more people will likely take a swim, authorities said.

Lifeguards said they're concerned that more people will be pulled out as water rushes through the channels and creates rip currents.

"As those waves die down, the rips are still dug in the bottom, and it looks very inviting, and that's when we get those rescues," Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said. To comment on this story, send an e-mail to Claire Metz.
