Lisa Myers and the NBC News investigative team won an Emmy Award on September 22, 2008, for “The Best Defense? The Secret Battle Over Body Armor.” The stories, which appeared on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, the TODAY show and Dateline NBC, won a national Emmy for “Outstanding Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast.” The stories used independent lab testing to question whether the body armor that the U.S. Army provides to America’s fighting men and women is truly the “best in the world, bar none,” as the Army claims.

Awards for NBC News Investigates include:

• 2008 Emmy Awards. Won a national Emmy for “Outstanding Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast.” The story, “The Best Defense? The Secret Battle Over Body Armor,” used independent lab testing to question whether the U.S. Army has selected the best possible body armor for its fighting men and women.

• 2007 Emmy Awards for Business Reporting. Winner in the Investigative Reporting category for the “Trophy II” series, which exposed efforts by the U.S. Army to scuttle a promising technology, called “Trophy”, designed to protect soldiers from rocket-propelled grenades.

• 2007 Gerald Loeb Awards. Winner of this prestigious award for excellence in business journalism, for “Trophy.” The four-part series exposed efforts by the U.S. Army to scuttle a promising technology, called “Trophy,” designed to protect soldiers from rocket-propelled grenades.

• 2007 Joan Barone Awards. The Radio-Television Correspondents Association awarded its 2006 Joan S. Barone Award to Lisa Myers and the NBC News investigative team for “Trophy.”

• 2007 IRE Awards. The Investigative Reporters and Editors association (IRE) awarded the NBC News Investigative Unit with a “finalist” award in the network television category for “Trophy.”

• 2007 George Polk Awards. NBC News Investigates won the prestigious George Polk Award for Network Television Reporting for “Trophy.” This was the first Polk Award that “NBC Nightly News” had won in more than two decades.

• 2006 Emmy Awards for Business Reporting. Winner in the Outstanding Investigative Reporting category for “Congress’s Private Air Force,” a hidden-camera investigation of the private jets used by members of Congress at cut-rate prices.

• 2006 Alfred I. DuPont Awards. “The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won a prestigious DuPont Award for outstanding coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. NBC News Investigates contributed several investigative stories to the winning entry.

• 2006 George Foster Peabody Awards. “The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won a Peabody for outstanding coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. NBC News Investigates contributed eight investigative stories to the winning entry.

• 2005 Edward R. Murrow Awards. NBC News Investigates won a Murrow Award for “The Predator & the Hunt for Bin Laden.” These three exclusive stories used classified CIA aerial footage of Osama Bin Laden walking outside his Afghanistan compound to question the U.S. response to al-Qaida before 9/11.

• 2004 Emmy Awards for Business Reporting. Winner in the Outstanding Investigative Reporting category for “Halliburton & the Business of Reconstruction.”
