U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski suffered a serious knee injury while skiing Sunday and an aide says she is using a wheelchair.

The ski patrol at the Alyeska Ski Resort south of Anchorage said the Alaska Republican tumbled as much as 300 feet.

A spokesman said Tuesday that Murkowski believes she tore two ligaments in her left knee during the fall.

Spokesman Mike Brumas said Murkowski also is "bruised and a little battered" and will have to use a wheelchair for several days.

He said the senator is an expert skier but she fell while skiing on the resort's second hardest trail at Alaska's Mount Alyeska.

Brumas said Murkowski had flown back to Washington and was getting an MRI exam Tuesday.
