Hardball College Tour: Bernard Goldberg

Is there a bias in the media? Bernard Goldberg, author of the best-selling book, “Bias, A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News” joins Hardball’s Chris Matthews for the College Tour to answer this question. Next stop: The University of Miami.

IN HIS NEARLY thirty years at CBS News, Emmy Award winner Bernard Goldberg earned a reputation as one of the preeminent reporters in the television news business. When he looked at his own industry, however, he felt that media far too often ignored their primary mission: to provide objective, disinterested reporting. Again and again he saw news that reflected the biases of a cultural and political elite but not the broad mass of the american public.

For years, Goldberg appealed to reporters, producers, and network executives for more balanced reporting, but no one listened. Now, breaking ranks and naming names, he reveals a corporate news culture, where he feels the closed-mindedness is breathtaking, and in which entertainment wins over hard news every time.

While news bias may seem like an academic discussion, the power of the media over the last several decades to shape and influence the national debate on public policy questions is almost equal to our elected officials. Goldberg joins the Hardball College Tour to talk about the power of the medium, and how it influences politics.

Bernard Goldberg is the winner of seven Emmy Awards and was once rated by TV Guide as one of the ten most interesting people on television. Having served for nearly thirty years as a reporter and producer for CBS News, he now reports for the critically acclaimed HBO program Real Sports, hosted by Bryant Gumbel. Goldberg has written op-eds for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. He lives with his family in Miami.

Hardball will air live at 9 p.m. ET from the Frances L. Wolfson Building at the University of Miami School of Communication.
