An alligator killed an 11-year-old girl as she swam with friends in a river in northeastern Brazil, authorities said.
Firefighters told local media that Gigliane do Nascimento Bira was attacked Sunday in shallow water while playing with a brother and two other friends in a river in the state of Rondonia.
The private Agencia Estado news service said authorities found the 13-foot-long animal about 330 feet from where it attacked the girl.
Agencia Estado and other local media said authorities shot and killed the alligator so the girl's body could be removed.
Calls to Rondonia authorities were not immediately answered.
