Philippine senator Benigno Aquino III is leading in the unofficial tally for the presidential contest, the Commission on Elections said on Monday, hours after voting ended in the Southeast Asian nation.

The tally was based on results representing around 25 percent of total votes. More than 50 million people were eligible to vote in the elections.

The tally gave Aquino 5.06 million votes as of 9:21 p.m. (1321 GMT), with former President Joseph Estrada in second place on 3.2 million.
