Maxim Unveils Power-Management Solution for Intel Atom Processor-Based Embedded Applications

/ Source: GlobeNewswire

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 11, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Maxim Integrated Products (Nasdaq:MXIM) today announces the MAX8958*, a highly integrated power-management (PMIC) solution validated with the Intel Atom processor Z6xx series and Intel SM35 Express chipset for embedded products. Maxim's solution contains all of the necessary components to power both the central processing unit (CPU) and system controller unit (SCU), as well as other peripherals in embedded applications. The MAX8958 will allow developers to reduce time to market and increase battery usage time up to 10% relative to competing solutions. It meets shrinking form-factor requirements in next-generation embedded applications including digital security, media phones, in-vehicle infotainment, and industrial applications.

Maxim 's engineers worked closely with Intel's team to develop this fully integrated analog and mixed-signal power-management solution that meets the aggressive power-reduction targets set for the Intel platform. "The MAX8958 was customized to deliver the longest battery life in the smallest form factor for embedded products based on the Intel Atom processor Z6xx series and the Intel SM35 Express chipset," explained Chae Lee, Vice President of Handheld Power at Maxim. "We are proud of what we have accomplished. Maxim 's solution leverages innovative IP to provide a differentiated solution for embedded products."

"Embedded market segments are expanding and growing very quickly to encompass a very large assortment of end products," commented Jonathan Luse, Director of Marketing for Intel's embedded low-power products division. "Intel's innovation in low-power technologies, along with power management solutions from companies such as Maxim, enable device makers to introduce exciting new embedded products with smaller form factors, longer battery life, and advanced capabilities."

The MAX8958 provides two Quick-PWM™ VID controller supplies, three high-efficiency step-down converters, 13 LDOs, an RTC with alarms, processor platform sideband signals, a clock output for communications modules, a backup battery charger, and an SPI™ interface for programming. This PMIC is optimized to fit in a 5.4mm x 5.7mm x 0.4mm (pitch) wafer-level package (WLP).
