Cheney v U.S. District Court

The Supreme Court is asked by the Sierra Club and a non-profit law firm to allow them to press their lawsuit against the vice president, in order to see documents involving the White House Energy Task Force, which the vice president conducted shortly after the Bush administration took office. As it reached the justices, the case is strictly procedural, about whether the case can continue.

  • If the administration wins, the two groups would find it difficult, if not impossible, to proceed with their suit.
  • If the groups win, they would be allowed to ask a federal judge to order the administration to reveal documents about how the task force operated, litigation that would likely proceed as the presidential campaign heats up in the fall.
