General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. — the two largest U.S. automakers — said Tuesday the Securities and Exchange Commission has asked for information on pension fund accounting.

The SEC said last week it is looking into possible accounting abuses involving companies' assumptions about employee pension funds.

Ford has received requests from the SEC on the accounting of its pension funds, Ford Chief Financial Officer Don Leclair told reporters and analysts on a conference call.

The SEC asked GM last week to voluntarily provide information on the accounting of its pension and post-retirement health care plans. GM said it was complying with the request.

"We are confident that GM's financial reporting in this complex area has been accurate and complete," GM spokeswoman Toni Simonetti said.
