Two people were killed when a camel trampled them at a Texas camel farm on Saturday, authorities said.

The bodies of Peggye McNair, 72, the owner of Camel Kisses Farm near Wichita Falls, and Mark Mere, 53, were found just after 2:30 p.m. local time, Wichita County Sheriff David Duke told NBC station KFDX.

Duke told the station Mere got into a pen with three camels after a water trough became frozen over. But then a male camel that was in the mating season charged Mere — and as he tried to escape it then attacked McNair, who was trying to close the gate, the sheriff told the station.

The camel was still acting aggressively to deputies who arrived on the scene, the station reported, and game wardens killed it with the permission of the owner’s family.
