The couple living two doors down from Mitt Romney's new house in San Diego have a message for him: we may both be men, but our marriage is no less loving than yours.
"We look at our family [as] no different than he and Ann," Tom Maddox told Lawrence O'Donnell on tonight's episode of The Last Word. Though Maddox and his partner Randy Clark have been together for 29 years, they were only able to marry after the California Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that same-sex couples have a right to marry. (This ruling was later negated by California's Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution so that same-sex marriages could no longer be performed after November 5, 2008.)
"It's [Romney's] stance on the freedom to marry that really concerns us the most," said Clark, who also appeared on the program. Though President Obama endorsed marriage equality in early May, Romney— who is, at this point, the presumptive Republican nominee— still opposes same-sex marriage.
"I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender," he told reporters, "and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name."
As Lawrence noted earlier in the segment, Romney plans to triple the size of his San Diego residence. And yes, this is the planned site of the infamous car elevator.
