JAKARTA, Indonesia - The body of an American tourist allegedly murdered by her own daughter while vacationing in Bali began its journey back to the United States on Tuesday, officials said. The half-naked corpse of Sheila Von Weise-Mack, 62, was found stuffed in a suitcase in the back of a taxi outside an exclusive hotel on the Indonesian resort island. Daughter Heather Lois Mack, 19, and 21-year-old Tommy Schaefer have been accused of the murder.
Mack’s coffin left Sanglah Hospital in Bali’s capital Denpasar at 4:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET) and was escorted to the city’s airport by an FBI vehicle, Police Forensic Chief Dudut Rustiyadi told NBC News. The body was due to fly to Singapore on a Korean Air jet at 1:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday (2.45 p.m. ET on Tuesday) and from there to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Police last week announced the pair were “charged” with murder but later said that wasn't the case. Under Indonesia’s civil law tradition, suspects are only charged during their first appearance in court. Mack and Schaefer remain in custody as the investigation continues but haven't yet appeared in front of a judge.
