President Barack Obama on Tuesday continued his fiery rebuke of a gridlocked Congress and defended executive actions as the only recourse he has to a Republican opposition that is “doing nothing.”

“Middle class families can’t wait for Republicans in Congress to do stuff. So sue me,” Obama said during a speech urging Congress to reach agreement on funding for highway and transit programs.

House Speaker John Boehner announced last week that he planned to file a lawsuit against the president over his use of executive actions. Obama has said such actions were necessary because Republicans have been unwilling to compromise.

“As long as they’re doing nothing, I’m not going to apologize for trying to do something,” Obama said.
