Six years into his presidency, Barack Obama is finally on Twitter as @POTUS.

The official White House account tweeted out video of the the First Tweet.

And one follower had a particularly tongue-in-cheek response to the new username.

The White House said in a blog post that the new account "will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him. President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them."

So far, @POTUS follows 65 users of the social media platform, including Vice President Joe Biden and former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

He also signed up for updates from top government agencies and major league sports teams from his hometown of Chicago.

Within minutes of his first tweet, the account had over 50,000 followers.

An @BarackObama account on Twitter, run by the staff of his Organizing for Action group, has about 60 million followers. Obama has occasionally tweeted from that account personally, signing his tweets with "-bo."
