KIEV, Ukraine - One of the protesters who helped to run Viktor Yanukovych out of office turned his anger to another era on Wednesday.

An activist named Vitali burned books by Vladimir Lenin as he manned a barricade in Kiev. Asked why, he simply answered: "Because I hate Lenin."

Barricades built of tires and bricks remain in the streets around Independence Square, which was the epicenter of the pro-West demonstrations which which ousted Yanukovych last month. Dozens of people were killed by government snipers and in violent clashes with police before the former president fled the country.

Dozens of statues of Lenin, who was the architect and former leader of the Soviet Union, have been toppled around Ukraine.
