Demonstrators in the nerve-center of Ukraine's protest movement said they were "peaceful people" and not intent on resorting to the violence that made Thursday the deadliest day of the country's crisis.

NBC News' James Novogrod reported from Kiev's Independence Square, which is known as Maidan, on Friday.

They also sought to counter reports that anti-government protesters were targeting police in the streets.
