When some iPhone and iPad users tried to download Apple's iOS 9 update on Wednesday, they got an error message instead of a new operating system.

The software went live at 1 p.m. ET, available as an over-the-air update or by plugging an iPhone or iPad into a computer with iTunes.

The problem didn't affect everyone who tried to download iOS 9. Those who did experience problems, however, got a message that said, "Software Update Failed: An error occurred downloading iOS 9."

Apple also delayed the release of watchOS 2, its operating system for the Apple Watch, because it found a bug that is taking it longer than expected to fix. It was supposed to be available to the public on Wednesday, but now Apple says it will be released "shortly."

NBC News reached out to Apple concerning the iOS 9 issue but the company did not respond. As Slate originally reported, Twitter users have also complained about getting stuck on a message that reads "Update Requested ..." when trying to download iOS 9.
