Huzzah! The rumors are true. "Borderlands 2" is underway and could launch as early as spring of 2012.

Of course, the sequel to the much-loved post-apocalyptic role-playing first-person-shooter may also launch as late as spring of 2013, or so says publisher 2K Games. But let's focus on the positive: the four-player shooting and looting favorite is coming back!

Take Two announced this morning that Gearbox Software is hard at work on the sequel to "Borderlands" — a game that was set on the broken-down alien world of Pandora and featured a unique animated look and some awesome co-op play. The sequel is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs sometime during the fiscal year that begins April 1, 2012.

According to the press release:

'Borderlands 2' is the epic sequel to the ultimate four-player role-playing shooter loot-fest. Combining invention and evolution, 'Borderlands 2' features all-new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment, which come together in an ambitiously crafted story. Players will reveal secrets, and escalate mysteries of the Borderlands universe as they adventure across the unexplored new areas of Pandora.

The world will get its first look at "Borderlands 2" at the Gamescom event taking place in Germany Aug. 17 to 21, and at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle taking place Aug. 26 to 28.

Until then, if you want more details, you'll have to pick up a copy of Game Informer, which has a 12-page exclusive first look at the game.
