Apple's iPad is expected to continue dominating the tablet market this year, retaining a 61 percent share, according to a new report from Digitimes Research.

The Taiwanese firm says approximately 65.2 million tablets will be shipped in 2011 from manufacturers to retailers. Apple will be shipping 40 million of those devices.

An estimated 29 million iPads have been sold since the tablet went on sale in April 2010.

"Outside of the iPad, all eyes will be Android developments, as the platform has been extending its reach in the tablet sector even more rapidly than it did in the smartphone sector, with a penetration rate reaching more than 30 percent" for tablets, Digitimes said.

How that percentage shifts will be interesting to watch when Amazon gets in the mix.

As msnbc.com's Wilson Rothman wrote recently, "The tablet war begins in earnest when Amazon introduces an Android-powered Kindle — hopefully this fall."
