Refurbished Kindle now $99: Sign of new Kindles soon?

Hey, the Kindle has finally dropped to the magic price of $99.99 … if you don’t mind getting a refurbished model.

Gadget bloggers and deal hounds are pointing to Amazon’s price reduction on the refurbished, WiFi-only version of the Kindle 3 as evidence that the company is clearing the way for the rumored next-generation Kindles.

Amazon is also widely rumored to be developing its own Android tablet as part of its broader lineup, to compete with the iPad.

The same Kindle 3 refurbs previously sold for $129.99, according to the posts.

Peter Smith at IT World pokes a little fun at frenzy around this particular story, noting that evidence of Amazon doing this in the past, before a new Kindle launch, comes from a random forum poster who remembers it happening. “I love that so many blogs are building posts based on an offhand comment by someone named mooshie78,” Smith writes.

But given the time of year, it does make sense to expect some kind of announcement soon … whether or not this is really evidence of it.
