T-Mobile Galaxy S 4G may be fastest phone

T-Mobile has mentioned the Samsung Galaxy S 4G in passing, but tonight it revealed its specs. The phone, running on T-Mobile's 4G network, will be capable of theoretical speeds of up to 21 megabits per second. Realistically, it won't get anything close to that on a regular basis, but even so, it rivals the cable modem performance in many American homes.

At first I thought they sent the wrong pictures, because the phone resembles the second wave of iPhones almost freakishly, with that curved body and shiny bezel. What sets it apart is of course the 4-inch Super AMOLED display that many a phone nerd drools over, seen on other Galaxy S smart phones including T-Mobile's Vibrant. While both phones will be for sale when this phone launches this month, the Galaxy S 4G will eventually push the Vibrant out of the picture.

In order to get customers excited about the video applications of such a fast phone, T-Mobile is preloading "Inception" on every device. It will also have the Samsung Media Hub for video on demand, as well as T-Mobile TV, from MobiTV.

Like many phones of its class, it will have a front-facing video camera, and will use the Qik mobile videochat software for face-to-face streaming video.

The thing people will want to do with this phone is to tether it with their laptop. The $30 data fee covers the phone only, for up to 5GB, but a $15 extra charge per month lets you share that 5GB with your laptops and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Compared to other networks, this is a good deal, and the network speed of this phone will make tethering even better.

Pricing is not yet announced, but you can get more information and stay in the loop by keeping an eye on T-Mobile's promotional page.
