‘Battleground America — the Homestretch’

MSNBC continues its fall coverage of the 2006 election Tuesday with “Decision 2006: Battleground America — The Homestretch.” Throughout the day, MSNBC will examine the critical races across the country that will decide who controls Congress for the final two years of the Bush administration.

Interviews during the day will include the Democratic candidate for the Senate in Tennessee, Rep. Harold Ford Jr.; the Democratic candidate for the Senate in Connecticut, Ned Lamont; the Democratic candidate for Senate in Missouri, Claire McCaskill; Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean; Republican National Committee Chair Ken Mehlman; the independent candidate for governor of Texas, Kinky Friedman; among many others.

MSNBC will also release the next round of MSNBC/McClatchy polls on the most competitive Senate races.

NBC News and MSNBC anchors and correspondents will be reporting live from the hottest battleground states:

  • Tucker Carlson will be in Virginia, where the race between Sen. George Allen, R, and challenger Jim Webb, D, is neck-and-neck.
  • Chris Jansing will be in Connecticut, reporting on the latest developments in the battle between Sen. Joe Lieberman, D,  and Democratic nominee Ned Lamont.
  • MSNBC’s chief Washington correspondent, Norah O’Donnell, will report from Tennessee on the close Senate race between Rep. Harold Ford Jr., D, and Republican Bob Corker.
  • “Hardball” correspondent David Shuster will survey the scene in Ohio, the epicenter of the 2004 elections.
  • NBC News’ Ron Allen will report from New Jersey, Lisa Daniels from Pennsylvania, George Lewis from California, Mark Potter from Florida, Chip Reid from Capitol Hill, Don Teague from Texas and Kevin Tibbles from Illinois.
  • And MSNBC.com’s chief political correspondent, Tom Curry, will join the coverage from Minnesota with reports on the key campaigns.

The network kicks off the at 9 a.m. ET with NBC News’ chief White House correspondent, David Gregory, anchoring from Washington. “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams will anchor the 1 p.m. hour; Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and moderator of “Meet the Press,” will anchor the 2 p.m. hour; and “Hardball” host Chris Matthews will anchor the 3 p.m. hour.

“Battleground America” will air all day, with special editions of “Hardball” at 5 and 7 p.m., “Tucker” at 6 p.m., “Countdown” at 8 p.m. and “Scarborough Country” at 9 p.m.
