Happy 18th birthday, Google... or is it?
The search giant is celebrating its entry into adulthood today with animated birthday balloons in a Google Doodle. But in previous years, the company has celebrated its birthday on a different date — including September 4, 6, 7, and 15.
The Google domain was registered on September 15, 1997 and Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998. Both seem like more natural fits for a birthday. So why is Google going with September 27, a date that doesn't seem to be tied to any significant moment in the company's history?
Quite simply: It's because they said so.
When you're as powerful as Google — or the Queen of England — you can celebrate your birthday any day you want.
