Freezing winds in Hawaii?
The summit of Haleakala National Park on Maui saw sustained 70 mph gusts, hail and ice on Monday, forcing the closure of the visitor center, the National Park Service said.
Monday's wind chill at the 10,000-foot summit reached -2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Restrooms and heaters in the center were out due to a power outage earlier on Sunday. Power was restored Monday afternoon.
Another visitor center at the 7,000-foot level remained open Monday, park ranger Dominic Cardea said. He said the Haleakala visitor center should be reopened at dawn on Tuesday.
"If the road is open and the building is safe, we will be there," Cardea said, "but if you do come, watch for ice on the road, and dress like you are visiting Denali National Park in Alaska and not Hawaii."
The temperature for the coastal areas of Maui was at a balmy 80 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
