A small plane landed upside down in a pond shortly after takeoff, leaving one person dead and another missing, authorities said.

The vintage Globe GC-1 Swift crashed after takeoff from Cottage Grove Airport at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Lane County sheriff’s officials said.

The pilot, 62-year-old Mark Clark, of Eugene owned the plane, said friends at the airport.

Clark’s body was found immediately. But a sheriff’s dive team and marine patrol searched the pond for several hours before the body of his passenger was found. The passenger’s identity was being withheld pending family notification.

No other details were immediately available. Federal investigators have been called to the site.
