Google's Street View halted in Greece

A privacy watchdog has banned Google Inc. from gathering images in Greece for its Street View service until it provides additional privacy guarantees.

Greece's Data Protection Authority, or DPA, says it reached the decision despite receiving assurances from Google that it would blur faces and vehicle license plates when displaying the images online.

Street View is a feature in Google's online mapping service. It provides panoramic, street-level images generally taken by vehicles sent to record video of urban areas.

The DPA, in a decision announced Monday, says it wants clarification from the Mountain View, Calif.-based Google on how it will store and process the original images.
