Weekend motorists take note: U.S. retail gasoline prices hit a record for the fourth day in a row in a daily survey of pump prices by the American Automobile Association, the AAA said Friday.

Self-serve regular rose to an average of $1.746 per gallon, up four-tenths of a cent from the prior record set Thursday, the AAA said.

A month ago, prices were 6.5 cents lower. A year ago, they were 7.5 cents lower. Before this week, the previous record had been set late last summer toward the end of the peak driving season.

Adjusted for inflation, gasoline is not at its peak. In today's dollars, the price of gasoline in 1981 was about a nickel short of $3 per gallon.

The AAA, a motorist and travel group, said the highest average price was in California at $2.13 a gallon with the lowest in South Carolina at $1.62 per gallon.
