A typhoon packing torrential rains killed two people and left four missing in South Korea after it flooded houses and roads and capsized a boat, an anti-disaster agency said on Monday.

Dianmu, meaning “Mother of Lightning” in Chinese, slammed into the central provinces of South Korea and western Japan at the weekend, killing three people in Japan. Transport was snarled, tens of thousands of households lost power and several oil refineries halted shipments.

In South Korea, 168 houses have been evacuated and 26,811 houses lost power for hours, the National Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.

Separately, Yonhap news agency reported the death toll stood at three in the province of North Chungchong, after two farmers drowned, and a man was buried by a landslide.

Typhoons often hit South Korea in the summer. Last year, typhoon Maemi, packing winds of record strength, tore into southern parts of the Korean peninsula, leaving 129 dead or missing. In 2002, typhoon Rusa killed more than 100 people.
