A man drowned after he was pulled off a boat and into a Northern California bay by a crab pot on Sunday, authorities said.
The Marin County Fire Department got a call around 10 a.m. on Sunday that a man had fallen over the side of a boat into Tomales Bay, said John Dell'Osso, chief of interpretation and resource education at Point Reyes National Seashore.
Dell’Osso said the man was fishing with two other people when his leg became entangled in the rope attached to a commercial crab trap, or pot
When the pot was dropped into the water, the line dragged him off the boat and underwater, Dell’Osso said.
Rescuers helicoptered to the bay immediately and recovered the man’s body, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Dell’Osso said.
Dell’Osso said the man’s name has not yet been released. Investigators are also looking into whether or not foul play was involved, he added.
