A Utah state trooper remains in critical condition after being steamrollered by an out-of-control car on a highway in Southwest Utah on Monday evening, authorities said.
Trooper David Schiers “suffered significant injuries, but it looks like he’s going to make a full recovery,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said.
About 10:30 p.m. local time on Monday (12:30 a.m. ET), Schiers was investigating an accident on the left shoulder of northbound Interstate 15 in Cedar City. In video captured by Schiers’ patrol car dash cam, a black sedan skids out of control in rainy conditions and smashes into the accident scene, pinning him underneath the car.
Schiers was first taken by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City. He has since been transferred to Intermountain Medical Center near Salt Lake City, Royce said.
“It just goes to show you the danger that troopers face,” Royce said.
