A police officer and two suspects were shot as they exchanged gunfire during a traffic stop in Alabama, NBC station WVTM reported.

A police officer and two suspects were shot as they exchanged gunfire during a traffic stop in Alabama, NBC station WVTM reported.

Monday afternoon's shootout happened on a service road off Interstate 65 near Warrior, which is located about 20 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama State Trooper Chuck Daniel said in a statement.

The Warrior Police Department officer involved was later released from Birmingham's UAB Hospital after being hit in his protective vest, WVTM reported. The affiliate said the two suspects, who were driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, were undergoing surgery at the same hospital on Monday night.

Daniel's statement said "gunfire was exchanged between a Warrior Police Officer and two suspects" but did not provide further details on the incident or injuries. He did not say who opened fire first, nor what the two people were suspected of.

Alabama's State Bureau of Investigation was on the scene and would report its findings to the district attorney, Daniel added.
