The Transportation Security Administration agent killed by a gunman at Los Angeles International Airport three weeks ago was hit by 12 bullets, according to an autopsy report released Friday.
One of the bullets that hit Gerardo Ismael Hernandez, 39, struck his aorta, and he was in full cardiac arrest when he arrived at the hospital on Nov. 1, according to the report from the Los Angeles County coroner. Forty bullet fragments were recovered from the body, the autopsy shows.
Earlier this week, the coroner said that Hernandez died within two to five minutes after being shot. He was the first TSA agent to die in the line of duty in the agency's 12-year history.
The head of the TSA union has criticized the time it took for aid to be given to Hernandez.
His wife, Ana, called him "a joyful person" who "took pride in his duty for the American public and for the TSA mission."
The 22-page report said a note found in the suspect's possession expressed anger against police and the TSA. The gunman was identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, of Los Angeles.
A source involved in the investigation has said that Ciancia carried a handwritten "manifesto" explaining the motive behind his attack, in which he allegedly used an assault-style semiautomatic rifle.
He is accused of killing Hernandez and wounding two other TSA agents and a civilian. Ciancia was severely wounded by police at the airport and was released from the hospital on Tuesday.
