The Denver Post is reporting that Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., is planning to challenge incumbent Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo. -- a move which could allow the Republican Party to further expand the 2014 Senate playing field.

NBC News has yet to confirm this news, however.

The GOP field currently running to challenge Udall includes Ken Buck (who lost the 2010 Senate race) and state Rep. Amy Stephens. But the addition of Gardner would give the GOP a sitting congressman to take on Udall, if Gardner does run and eventually wins the GOP primary.
