An anonymous bomb threat to a passenger jet brought an airport in the Polish capital to a standstill early Thursday.
Warsaw–Modlin Mazovia Airport received "an anonymous call that there was an explosive device" on a Boeing 737 belonging to Irish-based Ryanair, an airline spokesman said in an email.
Passengers had not yet boarded the plane, which was due to take off bound for Oslo, Norway, at 8:40 a.m. local time (2:40 a.m. ET). The spokesman added that the airport was closed to inbound arrivals "as a security precaution" while officials examined the plane.
According to Ryanair, airport officials believe the bomb threat was a hoax. The airport was not immediately available for comment and it was not clear when the airport would resume normal operations.
Polish police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski confirmed to NBC News that officers were at the airport checking the plane.
