At least 23 soldiers were killed when a military barracks partially collapsed in Russia, trapping dozens in the rubble, news agencies reported.

The concrete building, in the central southern region of Omsk, had 337 military personnel inside when it crumbled on Sunday, TASS reported.

"As of 10:00 a.m. on July 13, 42 service members have been found under the rubble, 23 of them died," Russia’s Defense Ministry said, according to TASS.

Nineteen of the survivors were taken to hospital, Interfax reported.

A regional law enforcement source told TASS that the accident might have been caused by violations during repair work.
