The rifle range is a facility Marines go through to develop their "fundamental combat marksmanship" skills, 1st Lt. Colleen McFadden, public affairs officer of 1st Marine Division, told NBC News.

McFadden would not provide any more details about how the fatal shooting happened.

"The command's priorities are to take care of the Marine's family and friends," McFadden said in a separate statement. "We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time."

The Marine has not been identified pending the notification of their next of kin.
