The facade of a dilapidated hotel collapsed early Tuesday in Algeria's capital, killing eight people and injuring 21 others, authorities said.

Rescue workers with sniffer dogs retrieved the bodies from the three-story Hadika Hotel in downtown Algiers near the north African country's National Theater, officials said.

The dead included six men, a woman and a child. Their nationalities were not immediately available.

The 34-room hotel, built around 1860, crumbled with about 30 people inside, officials said. A couple with their young son were killed, and at least one person was in serious condition at a hospital.

The cause of the collapse was under investigation.
