A Boeing Delta 2 rocket blasted off from a seaside launch pad Monday, carrying a Global Positioning System satellite into space.

The GPS Block IIR-15 (M) satellite joins a sister satellite that was launched last year. The new satellite was launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and should be operational 11,000 miles (17,700 kilometers) above Earth after about a month of tests in space.

The satellite will be used by the military and civilians to provide navigation and timing data.
