A man who produced thousands of images of himself sexually abusing children as young as 3 months old was convicted Wednesday on more than 50 child pornography charges.
Jurors spent more than a week reviewing excruciating video evidence in the case of John Jackey Worman, 41, of the Philadelphia suburb of Colwyn. The jury announced its verdict after deliberating for about half a day.
Worman, who showed little reaction to the verdict, faces a maximum sentence of 15 to 30 years in prison on each count. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18; he has been in custody since February 2006.
Worman had cameras mounted in the bathroom of a friend who baby-sat children in her suburban row house. He made the videotapes over a three-year period between 2003 and 2006, capturing children as they undressed and showered at the sitter's home in Collingdale. Prosecutors say he also sexually abused eight other children, including one 3-month-old, and videotaped the assaults.
Police have said more than 1 million images were found on Worman's computer, including thousands of videos that Worman produced of himself raping children.
Defense attorney Mark Cedrone challenged some of the evidence and said he disagreed with the jury instructions on some counts. But he said the jury did its job, deliberating for several hours over the course of two days.
"I don't think the jury just succumbed to the ugliness of the case," Cedrone said.
The jury was set to begin deliberating Wednesday in the case of co-defendant Dorothy Prawdzik. Prosecutors say she is a one-time girlfriend of Worman's who posed children in front of the hidden cameras.
The baby sitter, Concetta Jackson, pleaded guilty this month to one count of manufacturing child pornography. She also is a former girlfriend of Worman's.
