In no doubt the most engaging look back at 2012, YouTube today (Dec. 18) posted a compilation of the 10 most-viewed videos of the year, along with an interactive, month-by-month timeline. You can watch the top four videos from each month, moving from January through November.

What emerges is a mixed bag of political events, natural (and human-made) disasters as well as lip syncs, parodies and serious new talent, all tied together by the top two viral songs of the year, Psy's " Gangnam Style " and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." The compilation condenses over 44 billion hours of video views into just over 4 minutes.
