Push for mandates on air conditioning after extreme heat wave deaths


Temperatures soared to 116 degrees in Portland during the deadly Pacific Northwest heat wave this summer. One report found most of the deaths were people alone at home “with no working air conditioning or fans.” The federal government and most states have no mandates for cooling devices. Now victims’ relatives and advocates are calling for change as extreme heat events become more common.
