A Twitter account purportedly written by Iran’s hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sent a message of support for the country's World Cup team. The account, @DrAhmadinejad, started in April. Although it is not verifiable by NBC News, it was linked to on Twitter by the respected news website Iran News Now. The most recent message congratulated the Iranian soccer team following their strong World Cup display against Argentina. Iran looked to be heading for a shock draw against superstar Lionel Messi's team until a last-minute goal scored by the former World Player of the Year on Saturday. An earlier tweet included a picture apparently of Ahmadinejad lining up for his university soccer team in 1975.
While in office, Ahmadinejad's claimed the U.S. government orchestrated the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and said the Holocaust was "a myth." Relations have thawed between Tehran and Washington since last year's election of Ahmadinejad's successor, the more moderate Hassan Rouhani.
