“American Idol,” the TV competition that was once a ratings powerhouse and minted one star recording artist after another, will end its run after 15 seasons, Fox announced on Monday.

In a tweet, the show said that the upcoming season, which begins in January, will be its last.

“American Idol” premiered in the summer of 2002 and was an instant sensation. But ratings have been declining for years — a far cry from the early days, when the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson appeared as complete unknowns before a three-judge panel.

At its peak, the show routinely drew more than 30 million viewers.
