Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko rallied thousands of protesters Saturday in Kiev's central Independence Square, but many in the crowd weren't convinced.

Tymoshenko said she would run for president, but she got a relatively muted reception as a former two-time prime minister whose own political career had been marked by controversy.

In 2009, Tymoshenko signed a contract with the Russian gas company, Gazprom, to supply natural gas — a deal that led to convictions on corruption and embezzlement charges.

"She was a part of the system, and that's why maybe a fresh face and a fresh person would be a better choice than someone who was already there," a woman in the crowd told the BBC.

Another protester said: "I think that people support Yulia Tymoshenko, but maybe the president should be another person."
